An unusual area of the Pacific Ocean is home to thousands of mysterious species

Of the 5,58,000 different organisms that have been recorded in the Zone, only 436 have so far been identified and named. Most of the species are at risk of disappearing from the face of the Earth along with their unique habitats. They are threatened by the mining industry, which destroys organisms when polymetallic nodules are mined to level the ocean floor.
