The Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), an area in the Pacific Ocean between Mexico and Hawaii, covers 4.4 million square kilometers. It is rich in valuable minerals, and also, although it looks rather lifeless, in reality it is characterized by a complex ecosystem. The latter is still virtually unexplored.
Specifically, Current Biology states that science does not have an accurate picture of nearly 90% of the species that inhabit the zone these days.
