Why do astronomers need disco balls?

A group of Scandinavian astronomers claim that disco balls used on nightclub dance floors could work as pinhole cameras to safely observe solar eclipses.

These are essentially sets of flat mirrors or so-called “pinhead mirrors”, each of which is the reflecting equivalent of a pinhole camera aperture.

The latter are often used as an inexpensive and safe means of observing solar eclipses and sunspots. Disco balls, on the other hand, provide a much cheaper alternative.
